Ukraine Strengthens Grid Resilience with 200 MW / 400 MWh Battery Storage Deployment
آخر أخبار الشركة Ukraine Strengthens Grid Resilience with 200 MW / 400 MWh Battery Storage Deployment

Kyiv — September 2025 — Amid ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure, Ukraine has taken a major step toward bolstering its power resilience. Private energy company DTEK, in partnership with U.S. technology firm Fluence, has brought online a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio totalling 200 MW / 400 MWh, the largest in the country and among the biggest in Eastern Europe.

Project Highlights

  • The deployment consists of six battery sites in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, each site ranging from 20 MW to 50 MW.

  • Together, the sites can store up to 400 MWh, enough to power around 600,000 Ukrainian homes for about two hours during peak demand or disruptions.
  • Construction was completed rapidly—from March to August 2025—much faster than typical projects of similar scale.
  • The investment amounts to roughly €125 million (~USD 146 million) from DTEK, with technical cooperation and equipment from Fluence.

Purpose & Impact

  • One of the primary motivations is to mitigate blackout risks amid recurring infrastructure damage caused by the conflict with Russia. The battery systems are expected to provide stability, backup power, and help smooth out fluctuations in electricity supply.

  • The distributed layout across six sites is designed to reduce vulnerability. If one site is affected by attack or disruption, others can still keep functioning.
  • It supports Ukraine’s longer-term energy strategy by integrating more renewable generation and making the system more decentralized.

Operational Details

  • Composed of Gridstack battery cubes from Fluence, designed for modular, scalable energy storage.

  • Ukrainian engineers received training in Germany and Finland to enable remote commissioning and maintenance, as on-site access is limited due to security constraints.
  • The system began commercial operations as of October 1, 2025, ahead of the harsh winter period.
